I’ve cosplayed since my mid-teens and have had a few experiences with purchasing cosplays over the years, both good and bad. If you’re new to purchasing cosplay, take a look at some of these tips!
Look out for stolen images:
If you search a cosplay, oftentimes there are listings from different sellers with the same exact image. Chances are, the image does not belong to them and was stolen from somewhere else. I have had times where I purchased a cosplay and received something very different from the picture itself. The costume in question was a Sailor Saturn cosplay. I had received a cosplay that looked nothing like the picture. It was a pretty disappointing experience! So if you look for a cosplay, make sure that the image shown is unique to the listing. On the same token, use websites such as eBay and Amazon with caution.
Keep an eye for reviews with customer pictures:
Some websites show reviews and include customer pictures so you can get an idea of what the cosplay would look like when receiving it. If the customer’s pictures and reviews are positive and match up to the photos shown in the listing, you’re good to go! But before you purchase, also make sure to check off-site reviews. People on cosplay.com’s forums occasionally post reviews of sites that sell cosplays.
You’d be surprised with how different prices can be on various sites!
Pay Close Attention to Sizing:
Many websites that sell cosplays use Asian measurements. which are smaller than American sizes. I for example, am an XL in American sizes, but am a 4XL in Asian sizing. A good amount of the websites have sizing charts that you can use. Make sure you know your measurements! Even if you think you are a certain size, knowing your measurements can make your cosplay fit much better.
If you have any additional tips, feel free to share! I may even add them to this post. I am around the range of being plus sized and am considering making a plus size cosplay guide, as well. Let me know what you think!
