My Favorite Places to Visit in NYC

This list is catered to people who are fans of anime and manga, and are visiting Manhattan! Manhattan is a vibrant city, full of a multitude of restaurants and shops.

1.) Kinokuniya: 1073 6th Ave, New York, NY 10018

Located a short walk away from Port Authority, Times Square, and directly across from Bryant Park, Kinokuniya NYC is a three floor book store! The main floor features a variety of English books, the bottom floor includes stationary and adorable Rilakkuma goods, and the top floor has a cafe, shelves of manga, and also art books and miscellaneous merch imported from Japan. I import items from Japan and was floored by some of the prices of the goods–the items can be quite pricey, especially CDS and art books. I remember seeing a Love Live Sunshine CD there for about sixty bucks, while on the U.S. Itunes store, a digital copy sold for sixteen. But nevertheless, Kinoniniya is a haven for people who love anime and manga. I recommend the cafe here–the meals are cheap and delicious.

2.) Book-Off: 49 W 45th St, New York, NY 10036

Book-off is not too far of a walk from Kinokuniya. Just as the name suggests, there are plenty of gently used books, but there are also used DVDs, anime goods and CDS for sale. You can sell your old items and to make some space for new ones. There are three floors and plenty of items to look for–the variety of items is always changing and it’s worth stopping by. In the basement, there are manga–there’s a big section of manga in the original Japanese language and also an English section, as well.

3.) ViVi Bubble Tea: 205 Allen St. New York, NY 10014

Bubble tea is a popular beverage that you can eat and drink at the same time. If you enjoy tea, I recommend stopping by a bubble tea cafe. I selected this particular location because they offer their own spin on bubble tea, cotton candy bubble tea!

4.)  Baby the Stars Shine Bright Boutique: 158 Allen St, New York, NY 10002

BTSSB is a lolita fashion store located in lower Manhattan.  Lolita fashion is based on Victorian era fashion, with its intricate detail and lace. The store is combined with another store called Tokyo Rebel, which has gothic themed fashion. The store also recently started carrying Pop Vinyls and other nerdy goods.

5.) Mitsuwa Marketplace:  595 River Rd, Edgewater, NJ 07020

Although it is not located in NYC, Mitsuwa Marketplace is very close and is a short bus ride away.  Mitsuwa Marketplace is mainly a Japanese grocery store with a food court that offers fast ,delicious, and cheap food. The onigiri booth is my personal favorite. The Marketplace also has a makeup store, auto store, Kinokuniya, and toy store. I’ve spent hours at this location and it is definitely worth a visit.
